10th September 2026

With the start of September, the changes across the Lake District landscape happen quickly as the bracken rusts, the tourist coaches thin out and the valley is enveloped in colour. Little Nut Cottage is tucked right beneath the Pikes in Elterwater, sitting as the warm, perfect 200-year-old hideaway for exactly this type of escape. Appreciate this golden, unhurried season by discovering some of the ways to spend your time.
A short drive from Little Nut Cottage sits Grasmere's little Gingerbread Shop. It has been baking to the same secret Victorian recipes since the 1850s and often has a quick-moving queue outside its quaint doors. A visit to this beautiful shop is as much a part of Autumn in the Lake District as the falling leaves. Pair a stop-in with a wander around the beautiful village of Grasmere itself (slightly smaller and quieter than Ambleside), and you will find plenty of good fireside spots in local pubs, to pass the time when the weather turns.

The Langdale valley is one of the most photographed spots in the Lake District come autumn, and for good reason - the National Trust maintains an easy-level circular trail from the valley floor out to tree-lined Blea Tarn and on to Little Langdale. It's an easy half-day loop right from Little Nut Cottage's doorstep. This route passes Slaters Bridge and the atmospheric caves of Cathedral Quarry, which is a legacy of the area's quarrying past, shaped by humans and slowly being reclaimed by nature.

Autumn may be the loveliest time to discover the Langdale Valley. Little Nut Cottage sleeps four, with beautiful walks from the doorstep and a welcoming fire waiting when you return.

View our remaining autumn dates and plan a few wonderfully unhurried days in the Lakes.
