Things To Do

At any time of the year you will find breathtaking scenery in the Lake District, with the rolling hills and valleys providing a stunning backdrop for outdoor exploring. At the foot of the Great and Little Langdale valleys and beside ‘The Lake of the Swans’, lies Elterwater. The sleepy village is flanked by bracken-clad heathland and nestled against the magnificent backdrop of the Langdale Pikes. With its slow pace and picturesque topography, Elterwater is a much-loved destination for outdoor activities and appreciating nature.

Walking, Cycling, and Hiking

For outdoor enthusiasts, Little Nut Cottage is surrounded by some of the country’s best walking and hiking trails, with a range suitable for all levels of experience. One of our guests' favorites is the relaxing two-mile walk through open meadows along Elterwater Lake and past the beautiful Stockghyll Force waterfall. The walk leads to Chesters by the River, a popular vegetarian café in Skelwith Bridge, serving wholesome, delicious food. For more experienced adventurers the area also offers biking trails. The cottage is an ideal base for cycling up some of Britain’s toughest hill climbs, including Wrynose Pass which is  located about five miles away.

Fine Dining

There is an incredible array of fine dining experiences across Cumbria and the Lake District with the area being known for its fresh, local produce and world-class culinary talent. Though it is England’s least populated county, there have been 15 Michelin stars awarded across the region thanks to the quality of cuisine being prepared by passionate chefs. For an unforgettable dining experience, head to L’Enclume in the picturesque village of Cartmel. Regarded as one of the best restaurants in the UK, its setting in a 13th-century blacksmith’s workshop offers an exceptional atmosphere. The restaurant focuses on crafting dishes that respect the natural flavors of ingredients, capturing their true essence.

We also love SOURCE at Gilpin Hotel. It is a one Michelin star restaurant located near Windermere and is headed by Executive chef, Ollie Bridgwater (formerly of Heston Blumenthal’s three Michelin Star 'Fat Duck').Their ‘ORIGIN‘ menu is a shorter dining experience and provides a great introduction to their concept, which encompasses the same creativity and techniques over a fewer number of courses. Whereas their ‘SOURCE‘ menu is a longer experience that really showcases seasonality and fresh new dishes from the kitchen in an immersive culinary journey – the ultimate SOURCE at Gilpin Hotel experience.

Whether it’s the delicate poaching of fresh Windermere trout or the expertly seared Herdwick lamb, every plate at Michelin starred The Old Stamp House showcases the harmonious symphony of flavours that define the region. Paying homage to locally sourced ingredients, the 17th century surroundings help to set the mood as patrons are transported on an expedition of taste, guided by a team that wields culinary artistry and storytelling prowess in equal measure.

The Forest Side’s restaurant reflects the stunning landscape it inhabits, focusing on the freshest locally sourced seasonal produce. Head Chef Paul Leonard and his team prioritise sustainability, working with local farms and producers to ensure the highest quality ingredients. Many of the fruits, vegetables, and herbs used are homegrown in their own kitchen garden, with foraged elements from the surrounding Cumbrian landscape adding unique flavors to each dish. The restaurant’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the kitchen, supporting local businesses and contributing to the community. This dedication to provenance and quality results in an exceptional dining experience that celebrates both the region and its bountiful offerings.

The Cottage in the Wood is nestled in the heart of the English countryside offering a serene escape surrounded by nature. The cottage holds a deep connection to the poetic legacy of William Wordsworth, who lived and worked in the nearby village of Grasmere. With its rustic yet elegant interior, the cottage exudes warmth and comfort, making it the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with the natural world. The cosy atmosphere is complemented by the use of local materials and timeless design elements that blend seamlessly with the tranquil surroundings. The Cottage in the Wood offers a truly immersive and restorative experience, allowing guests to embrace the beauty of rural life, just as Wordsworth did.

Pubs, Hotels and other Attractions

In the evening, take a stroll to the Britannia pub, the Langdale Hotel, or the Eltermere Hotel for a drink and a bite to eat. In the latter half of the year, the local community comes alive with outdoor fairs and festivals, providing a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the area’s unique culture.

The Lingholm Kitchen takes pride in crafting dishes that showcase the region’s bountiful produce. The ambiance is equally enchanting, with cosy interiors and scenic outdoor seating that overlooks the serene Derwentwater. It is also supposedly the inspiration behind ‘Mr McGregor’s Garden’ from The Tales of Beatrix Potter.

Blackwell is a historic house-turned-gallery. With every glance out of its windows, the serene lake and lush gardens become a living canvas that complements the human creativity housed within. Blackwell isn’t just an arts venue; it’s a symphony of inspiration, where the echoes of the past harmonise with the whispers of modern ingenuity.
