Season of Stillness - Weatherstone House

Winter calm, lakeside charm and timeless beauty with a stay at Little Nut Cottage

When you arrive in the Lake District across the winter months, the frost‑kissed light immediately sharpens the senses. As you turn into the village of Elterwater, you are quietly greeted by a cluster of homes built by hand from slate and stone, rising dramatically against the backdrop of the Langdale Pikes - a welcoming sight after the journey along winding roads and open sky. Little Nut Cottage sits at the heart of this village, a thoughtfully restored 200‑year‑old Quarryman’s cottage that blends period character with contemporary comfort.

Pulling up on the stone driveway you feel a palpable shift, your shoulders drop and the pace of the everyday changes to something slower and more grounded. Stepping inside you are welcomed by details like oak beams, warm textiles and the soft glow of the wood‑burning stove. The atmosphere is both luxurious and immensely snug. From the primary bedroom’s elegant king‑size four‑poster to the versatile double room, every space is arranged to create a cosy retreat after days spent exploring Cumbria’s dramatic scenery.

What's on in February

Little Nut's surrounds offer stunning low‑level lake walks, like around Derwentwater and Buttermere, where bare trees and firm paths make for memorable circuits with multiple warming stops at local cafés. National Trust houses like Hill Top Farm and Blackwell Arts & Crafts House are also close by and make for a perfect activity on a chilly day.

Closer to Elterwater itself, neighbouring market towns bring life to leisurely afternoons: Ambleside offers charming shops, hearty pubs and lakeside strolls, while smaller village haunts such as the Britannia pub or Langdale Hotel serve as cosy refuges from winter winds.
